Latgale in couchsurfers eyes – part 5
What is Latgale?
Latgale – Land of Blue Lakes, the east part of Latvia.
Let’s listen to what travelers and history say (part 4 here).
‘Capital city’ of Latgale – Daugavpils (Dvinsk 1893-1920,
Dünaburg 1667 – 1893) is the second biggest city of Latvia.
The town’s history began in 1275 when the Livonian Order
built Dünaburg Castle 20 km up the Daugava river
from where Daugavpils is now situated.
Daugavpils is an important cultural center in eastern Latvia.
There are also several architectural, historical, and cultural monuments in Daugavpils. The most prominent is
the Daugavpils fortress dating mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries.
